Description

These Spinach and Feta Puff Pastry Twists are a delicious Mediterranean-inspired appetizer featuring flaky puff pastry filled with a savory mixture of fresh spinach, tangy feta, and Parmesan cheese. Perfectly seasoned and baked to golden perfection, they make a delightful vegetarian snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Pastry

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Make the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the finely chopped fresh spinach, crumbled feta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, olive oil, garlic powder, and salt and black pepper to taste. Mix thoroughly to blend all flavors evenly.
  3. Roll out puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a 10×12-inch rectangle, ensuring even thickness.
  4. Assemble the pastry: Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over half of the puff pastry rectangle. Then fold the other half of the pastry over the filling, gently pressing down along the edges to seal the pastry and encase the filling.
  5. Cut and twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the filled pastry into 1-inch-wide strips. Twist each strip several times to create a spiral shape and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet with some space between each twist.
  6. Egg wash and bake: Brush each pastry twist with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden color during baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the twists are puffed up and golden brown.
  7. Cool and serve: Allow the twists to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to enjoy the perfect flaky texture and melted cheesy filling.

Notes

  • You can substitute frozen spinach for fresh; just make sure it is thawed and well-drained before using to avoid soggy pastry.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the filling mixture if you want a touch of heat.
  • Serve warm for the best flavor and texture, but these twists can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
