Description

A comforting and hearty Southern-inspired dish featuring savory breakfast sausage gravy baked beneath golden, fluffy biscuits, perfect for a satisfying brunch or breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Biscuit Topping

  • 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Chopped chives or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or deep-dish skillet to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled. Keep the rendered fat; do not drain.
  3. Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the cooked sausage and cook for 1 to 2 minutes while stirring to coat the sausage and eliminate any raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy, about 5 to 7 minutes. Season with black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and optional crushed red pepper flakes. Remove from heat.
  4. Assemble the pie: Pour the prepared sausage gravy into the greased pie dish. Separate the biscuit dough into individual biscuits and arrange them on top of the gravy, slightly overlapping if necessary. If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the biscuit layer.
  5. Bake: Place the assembled pie in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and fully cooked through.
  6. Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Prepare the sausage gravy ahead of time and assemble the pie just before baking for convenience.
  • Use homemade biscuit dough instead of refrigerated dough for a from-scratch variation with a more personal touch.
  • Serve alongside eggs or a fresh fruit salad to complete a hearty breakfast or brunch.
