Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Casserole is a hearty and flavorful low-carb dish inspired by the classic sandwich. Made with ground beef, sautéed bell peppers and onions, creamy cheeses, and baked to golden perfection, it offers an easy and satisfying meal perfect for weeknights or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy and Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Optional Garnish

  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get it ready for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook the beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Cook until the beef is browned completely, then drain off any excess fat to keep the dish from being greasy.
  3. Sauté vegetables: Into the same skillet, add diced green bell pepper, yellow onion, and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are soft and fragrant.
  4. Add flavorings: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, then reduce the heat to low. Mix in the softened cream cheese and sour cream, stirring until everything is smoothly combined. Remove the skillet from heat at this point.
  5. Prepare egg mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream thoroughly to create a custard-like mixture.
  6. Assemble the casserole: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the beef and vegetable mixture evenly across the dish. Pour the egg and cream mixture over the beef layer, ensuring an even coverage. Finally, sprinkle shredded provolone and mozzarella cheeses evenly on top.
  7. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes. The casserole should be set and have a light golden color on top.
  8. Cool and garnish: Allow the casserole to cool for 5 minutes after baking. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired, then slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with shaved steak or ground turkey based on preference.
  • Adding mushrooms is a great way to enhance the flavor.
  • Try using pepper jack cheese for a spicier variation of the casserole.
