Description

Mississippi Sloppy Joes are a spicy, tangy twist on the classic sloppy joe sandwich. Made with lean ground beef cooked with a flavorful blend of ranch and au jus seasonings, butter, and pepperoncini peppers, this recipe delivers a rich and zesty sauce perfect for sandwich buns. Optional toppings like coleslaw, mayo, and sweet pickles add extra texture and flavor, making these sandwiches a hearty and delicious meal for any casual dining occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon au jus seasoning
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoncini peppers
  • 1/4 cup juice from pepperoncini peppers jar
  • 1/2 cup low sodium beef broth

For Serving (Optional)

  • Buns (toasted)
  • Mayo, to taste
  • Sweet pickles, to taste
  • Coleslaw

Instructions

  1. Brown the Meat and Onions: Add the ground beef and chopped onions to a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and the onions have softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove excess fat by spooning it out to keep the mixture lean.
  2. Add Seasonings and Simmer: Reduce heat to medium. Stir in butter, garlic powder, ranch seasoning, au jus seasoning, sliced pepperoncini peppers, pepperoncini juice, and beef broth. Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens but does not become dry.
  3. Toast the Buns: Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add buns cut-side down in batches and toast until the insides are nicely browned, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  4. Assemble and Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns. Add optional toppings such as mayo, sweet pickles, and coleslaw to taste, then serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of pepperoncini peppers and juice according to your preferred spice and tanginess level.
  • Using lean ground beef keeps the dish healthier, but you can substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • To toast buns, keep the heat moderate and watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Coleslaw adds a nice crunch and cooling effect that balances the spicy and savory flavors.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
