Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 medium onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon ranch seasoning
- 1 tablespoon au jus seasoning
- 1/2 cup sliced pepperoncini peppers
- 1/4 cup juice from pepperoncini peppers jar
- 1/2 cup low sodium beef broth
For Serving (Optional)
- Buns (toasted)
- Mayo, to taste
- Sweet pickles, to taste
- Coleslaw
Instructions
- Brown the Meat and Onions: Add the ground beef and chopped onions to a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and the onions have softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove excess fat by spooning it out to keep the mixture lean.
- Add Seasonings and Simmer: Reduce heat to medium. Stir in butter, garlic powder, ranch seasoning, au jus seasoning, sliced pepperoncini peppers, pepperoncini juice, and beef broth. Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens but does not become dry.
- Toast the Buns: Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add buns cut-side down in batches and toast until the insides are nicely browned, watching carefully to prevent burning.
- Assemble and Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns. Add optional toppings such as mayo, sweet pickles, and coleslaw to taste, then serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- You can adjust the amount of pepperoncini peppers and juice according to your preferred spice and tanginess level.
- Using lean ground beef keeps the dish healthier, but you can substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
- To toast buns, keep the heat moderate and watch closely to avoid burning.
- Coleslaw adds a nice crunch and cooling effect that balances the spicy and savory flavors.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
