Ingredients

Scale

Squid:

  • 1 pound cleaned squid (tubes and tentacles), cut into 1/2-inch rings

Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Other:

  • vegetable oil for frying
  • lemon wedges for serving
  • marinara sauce or aioli for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse and Dry Squid: Rinse the squid under cold water and pat completely dry with paper towels.
  2. Prepare Batter: Mix together the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper in a shallow bowl.
  3. Heat Oil: Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Dredge Squid: Dredge the squid rings and tentacles in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  5. Fry Calamari: Fry the calamari in batches for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  6. Drain and Serve: Transfer the fried calamari to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Serve hot with lemon wedges and dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, double-dip the squid before frying.
  • Avoid overcooking to keep the calamari tender.
