Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Cheese
- 1 lb ground beef (85/15)
- ½ lb turkey sausage (crumbled or sliced)
- 1 cup beef-style pepperoni slices (pork-free)
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Vegetables and Aromatics
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- Optional: sliced mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives
Sauce and Seasonings
- 1½ cups tomato sauce or pizza sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Dough and Oil
- 1 (8 oz) can refrigerated biscuit dough or crescent roll dough
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Skillet: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat to get ready for sautéing the aromatics.
- Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté until soft, about 3 minutes. Then stir in the minced garlic and cook briefly until fragrant, roughly 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Cook Meat: Add ground beef and turkey sausage to the skillet. Cook until the meat is fully browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed for a leaner pie.
- Add Sauce and Seasoning: Stir in 1½ cups of tomato or pizza sauce, 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Let the mixture simmer gently for 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Assemble Pie: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spoon the meat sauce into it evenly. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses evenly over the meat mixture. Arrange the beef-style pepperoni slices on top of the cheese layer.
- Add Dough Topping: Separate the biscuit or crescent roll dough pieces and arrange them on top of the casserole, covering as much of the surface as possible to form a crust.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving to allow the filling to set.
Notes
- Use beef-style pepperoni to keep the recipe pork-free.
- Optional vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives can be added to the meat mixture for extra flavor and nutrition.
- Drain excess fat from the cooked meat mixture to reduce grease and make the pie less oily.
- Biscuit dough and crescent roll dough can be used interchangeably based on preference.
- Letting the pie rest after baking helps the filling to firm up, making it easier to slice.
