Description

A Classic Patty Melt combining juicy seasoned beef patties, caramelized onions, and layers of Swiss and American cheese, all grilled between buttery rye bread slices to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

Bread & Butter

  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Additional Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Season the beef: In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Divide into four equal parts and shape into oblong patties to match the size of the rye bread.
  2. Caramelize onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly until caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook beef patties: Using the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high and cook the beef patties until well browned and cooked through, approximately 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside.
  4. Prepare bread: Spread the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened butter evenly on one side of each slice of rye bread.
  5. Assemble sandwiches: On the unbuttered side of four bread slices, place a slice of Swiss cheese, then a beef patty, followed by a generous portion of caramelized onions, a slice of American cheese, and top with a second slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
  6. Grill sandwiches: Heat the skillet over medium heat and cook each sandwich until the bread is toasted and golden, and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Serve: Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice if desired, serve hot, and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use softened butter for easy spreading on bread slices.
  • Ensure onions are cooked low and slow for the best caramelization and sweetness.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on skillet and stove heat.
  • Rye bread gives the classic flavor, but you can substitute with your preferred sturdy bread.
  • For a crispier sandwich, press down with a spatula while grilling.
