Ingredients
Scale
For the Mint Julep
- 10 fresh mint leaves
- 1 ounce simple syrup (see note below)
- 2 ounces Kentucky bourbon
- Club soda, to top up
- Crushed or shaved ice
Instructions
- Prepare Simple Syrup and Mint: Start by placing the fresh mint leaves into a glass. Tear any large leaves in half to release more flavor.
- Add Simple Syrup: Pour 1 ounce of simple syrup over the mint leaves in the glass.
- Muddle the Mint: Gently muddle the mint leaves for 2-3 minutes, pressing to release the oils and infuse the syrup with fresh mint flavor.
- Add Ice: Fill the glass almost to the top with crushed or shaved ice, creating a chilled base for your drink.
- Add Bourbon: Pour 2 ounces of your favorite Kentucky bourbon over the ice and muddled mint.
- Top with Club Soda: Add a splash of club soda to top up the glass, then stir gently to combine all ingredients.
- Garnish and Serve: Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint on top and enjoy your classic Mint Julep!
Notes
- Simple syrup is made by combining equal parts water and sugar, heated until the sugar dissolves, then cooled before use.
- Use crushed or shaved ice for the best chilling effect and proper texture.
- Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of simple syrup according to your taste.
- For an authentic experience, use Kentucky bourbon as the base spirit.
