Ingredients
Scale
French Toast
- 4 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or sourdough)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp butter (for frying)
- Pinch of salt
Caramelized Bananas
- 2 ripe bananas, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp brown sugar (packed)
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp rum (optional, for extra flavor)
Optional Toppings
- Maple syrup
- Powdered sugar
- Whipped cream
Instructions
- Make the French Toast Batter: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
- Cook the French Toast: Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter to coat the surface evenly.
- Dip and Fry the Bread: Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing both sides to absorb the batter evenly. Place the bread carefully onto the hot skillet and cook each side for 2 to 3 minutes until a golden brown crust forms and the toast is cooked through. Repeat with all slices and set aside warm.
- Caramelize the Bananas: In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced bananas, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir gently to coat the banana slices in the sugar and spices.
- Cook Bananas: Allow the bananas to cook, stirring occasionally, for approximately 3 to 4 minutes until they soften and develop a rich caramel color. For an optional touch, add 1 tablespoon of rum carefully and cook for an additional 1 minute to let the alcohol cook off. Remove the pan from heat.
- Assemble the Dish: Place each piece of French toast on a plate and spoon the warm caramelized bananas evenly over each slice. Add optional toppings such as maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream as desired.
- Serve: Serve the French toast immediately while warm with gooey caramelized bananas for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Choose thick slices of bread like brioche, challah, or sourdough for the best texture and absorption.
- If you prefer dairy-free, use plant-based milk such as almond or oat milk.
- The rum is optional but adds a lovely depth of flavor; ensure to cook it well to burn off the alcohol.
- Caramelize bananas gently to avoid burning and maintain softness.
- This recipe is best served immediately after cooking to enjoy the contrast of textures and flavors.
