Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Apple Filling
- 2 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
Toppings
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- Optional: powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the pastries.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Unfold the thawed puff pastry and lightly roll it out on a floured surface to smooth the seams. Cut into 4 equal rectangles and place them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
- Cook Apple Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until combined. Add the thinly sliced apples and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until they become just tender, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Assemble Pastries: Spoon an even amount of the cooked apple mixture onto each puff pastry rectangle, leaving a border around the edges free of filling to ensure proper puffing during baking.
- Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Brush this egg wash along the edges of each pastry to help them turn golden and glossy once baked.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up beautifully.
- Add Toppings and Serve: Let the pastries cool slightly before drizzling them with caramel sauce and optionally dusting with powdered sugar. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Best served the day they’re made for optimal freshness and puffiness.
- Use store-bought caramel sauce to save time or make your own for a richer flavor.
- For added texture, try sprinkling chopped pecans or walnuts over the apple filling before baking.
