Description

This Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak is a spicy, flavorful twist on the classic cheesesteak sandwich. Tender shredded chicken tossed in buffalo wing sauce is paired with sweet caramelized onions and gooey melted mozzarella cheese, all served in toasted hoagie rolls. Optional ranch or blue cheese dressing and fresh herbs add cool and fresh finishes, making this sandwich an irresistible comfort food perfect for game day or any casual meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Buffalo Chicken

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 1 cup buffalo wing sauce (like Frank’s RedHot)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

Sandwich Assembly

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or provolone or pepper jack)
  • Ranch or blue cheese dressing, for drizzling (optional)
  • Chopped green onions or parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté them until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 8–10 minutes. Once done, remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Prepare Buffalo Chicken: Using the same skillet, add the shredded cooked chicken and pour in the buffalo wing sauce. Stir well to evenly coat the chicken with the sauce and heat it through for 3–4 minutes.
  3. Preheat Broiler: Set your oven broiler to high or alternatively, preheat a griddle pan if you prefer to toast the bread that way.
  4. Toast Hoagie Rolls: Slice the hoagie rolls open, making sure not to cut all the way through so they hold together. Place them under the broiler for 1–2 minutes, until the insides become lightly toasted and golden.
  5. Assemble Sandwiches: Stuff each toasted hoagie roll generously with the buffalo chicken mixture, followed by the caramelized onions and then top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  6. Melt Cheese: Return the assembled sandwiches to the broiler for 2–3 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and become bubbly.
  7. Add Final Touches and Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the oven and drizzle with ranch or blue cheese dressing if using. Garnish with chopped green onions or parsley for freshness. Serve hot immediately.

Notes

  • Use cooked rotisserie or leftover chicken to save time.
  • Adjust the amount of buffalo sauce to control the heat level.
  • For extra flavor, you can add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce inside the sandwich.
  • Substitute mozzarella with provolone or pepper jack cheese for varied taste.
  • If you don’t have a broiler, you can melt the cheese on the stovetop using a lid or an oven-safe pan.
  • Leftover sandwiches can be wrapped tightly and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
